frequently asked questions: General

  • MULTI SEAL® and FlatOut are lines of high-performance tire sealants designed to stop under-inflation from punctures and slow leaks.
  • MULTI SEAL® is our industrial line of tire sealants designed for B2B applications. Target industries include waste, agriculture, mining, over-the-road trucking, construction, and military to name a few.
  • FlatOut is our retail line of tire sealants designed for DIY consumers that need to treat their personal equipment such as riding lawn mowers, ZTR’s, trailers, ATV’s, UTV’s, golf carts, bikes/Ebikes, and many more.
  • Effectively and rapidly seals large punctures
  • Effectively and rapidly seals slow leaks (leaks due to the tire’s natural porosity, leaks around the valve stem, bead leaks, etc.)
  • Single treatment lasts the life of the tire
  • Latex and adhesive free
  • Does not separate
  • Water washable
  • Non-flammable
  • Tires can still be repaired and retreaded
  • Freeze protected
  • Does not react with or damage tires
  • Does not react with or damage steel or aluminum wheels
  • Sets the standard for integrity
  • Simply put…” you do what you say, and you say what you do.” Too many tire sealant companies have made false or exaggerated claims over the years. This has led many users to distrust tire sealants as a whole. MULTI SEAL®® and FlatOut strive to set reasonable expectations for our products. While we will significantly reduce the number of flats you will experience, we will never claim that our sealants will flat proof a tire. As our founder would say: “It is realized, however, that even superior tire sealants have limitations and that no sealant can chainsaw proof a tire.”

  • MULTI SEAL®® and FlatOut will not make any claims that are not backed by science or field data. Our pedigree is science and it is a core value for all decisions we make.

  • Yes. We manufacture our own tire sealants at our headquarters in New Caney, Texas, USA (north side of Houston). We are experts in tire sealants and the art of making an extreme-performance tire sealant. In fact, tire sealants are all we do! Keeping manufacturing in-house allows us to maintain control over all aspects of the process and to deliver the highest quality possible to our customers.

  • MULTI SEAL® and FlatOut are intended to be preventative maintenance products. Put the product in the tire from day 1 and enjoy the 24/7 protection it provides you!
  • With that said, we do have customers that use MULTI SEAL® and FlatOut products as flat fixers. Please remember that a tire that has been run severely under-inflated is more than likely an unsafe tire and should be inspected by a professional.
  • MULTI SEAL® does not believe in one size fits all solutions. Based on this, we have created and are continuing to expand a full line of tire sealants to meet our customer’s needs:
  • Heavy Duty (Standard and Environmental Formulas) – Our workhorse product. Seals puncture up to ¾”.
  • Armor Seal – Our premium product designed for the most hazardous environments. Seals puncture up to 1 ¼” in tires that are 18 plies or greater.
  • Hydro Seal – Specifically designed for ballast-filled tires. Seals puncture up to ½”.
  • FlatOut Formula – Designed for the power sports market. Seals puncture up to ½”.
  • Do you have a unique need? MULTI SEAL® can formulate a solution in-house!
  • We do not recommend the use of our products in passenger vehicles (including ½ ton trucks and SUV’s). Does our product seal punctures and slow leaks in passenger car tires? Yes. However, in the United States all modern passenger vehicles are mandated to have TPMS (Tire Pressure Monitoring Systems). Our product is not currently compatible with these types of TPMS sensors commonly found in passenger vehicles. For more information on TPMS, please refer to our FAQ on TPMS.
  • MULTI SEAL® and FlatOut is a high-tech system of synthetic fibers and fillers in a carefully designed liquid suspension. When a puncture occurs, the escaping air carries the sealant to the hole. The fibers cling to the side of the puncture and form a “filter” which entrap the fillers. A plug is formed which seals the leak instantly with almost no air loss. As the tire flexes under load, the fiber/filler mass compresses to form a dense plug. There is absolutely no drying, curing, or chemical reaction taking place. It is a mechanical/physical plug. The process is the same whether or not the penetrating object stays in the tire. The process will repeat itself for each additional puncture.
  • Up to 95% of tread area punctures are sealed in tubeless tires and up to 70% of tread area punctures are sealed in tubed tires.
  • It is important to note, for high-speed applications, any tire damage caused by punctures should be inspected by a professional.
  • Under-inflation in tires occurs:

    • Naturally because of the porous nature of tire rubber

    • Because of slow leaks around the bead/rim interface

    • Because of slow leaks around the valve stem

    • Because of gasket leaks on multi part rims

  • MULTI SEAL® and FlatOut coats the inside of the tire, dramatically reducing porosity. As the sealant spreads around the tire and rim, slow leaks from the bead, pin holes in the rim and leaking valve stem problems are fixed in a similar fashion to punctures.

  • Because MULTI SEAL® and FlatOut lasts the life of the tire, the need to frequently “air up” the tire is significantly reduced.

  • We claim lower effectiveness on tubed tires for several reasons:
    • In many cases, the tubes are very thin and cheaply made. This can lead to the tubes ripping when punctured which makes them very difficult to seal.
    • We also see a lot of tubes that are not properly sized for the tire – either too big or too small. This can also lead to ineffective sealing due to the movement of the tube in the tire or ripping.
  • We have many customers that remove their tubes (if they have a wheel that is designed to be tubeless) once they learn that the sealant is more effective in tubeless applications. A lot of users were simply using tubes due to their puncture issues. MULTI SEAL® and FlatOut helps to mitigate these issues!
  • If you must use a tube, we recommend getting the thickest, best quality tube you can find. We have seen reliable results (especially in bicycle and dirt bike applications) by combining our product with a high-quality tube.
  • No! All our sealants contain a powerful anti-corrosion formula specifically designed to prevent rust and corrosion on all types of rims – steel, aluminum, painted or unpainted, coated or uncoated, as well as protecting the valve stem fitting.
  • Our products will NOT fix an already rusty or corroded rim – no sealant will. Prior to installing MULTI SEAL® or FlatOut, make sure that the rim is free of corrosion or rust. A corroded rim is an unsafe rim.
  • Beware of any sealant that claims to remove rust or fix damaged inner liners. Typically, the chemistry used to remove rust on steel rims is not compatible with aluminum rims.
  • No. MULTI SEAL® and FlatOut are inert to tire rubber.
  • No. Our products will NOT catch fire. It is non-flammable by any measure. When MULTI SEAL® or FlatOut is heated to a high temperature, whether by direct flame, spark, conduction, whatever, it simply boils away and does not burn.
  • Our products last the life cycle of the tire. It will not dry out, separate, or lose effectiveness even after years of service, as long as the tire remains on the rim. In harsh conditions, many punctures can cause the sealant to be “used up” as it takes some sealant to fix the wound each time.
  • Our tire sealants have an unlimited shelf life as long as it is stored in a cool dry location out of direct sunlight with the lid or cap firmly seated. However, ask yourself, is the sealant helping me by being in the container or is it better for it to be protecting my tires? If you need guidance on getting the sealant installed, please reach out to us for help.
  • Yes. MULTI SEAL® and FlatOut tire sealants do help to hydro-dynamically balance tires. Over the last 45 years, we have received countless stories of our product significantly improving balance and ride quality, especially in medium duty and heavy-duty classed vehicles.
  • The mechanism of balancing is no different than any other product that claims to balance tires such as balancing liquids/beads/powder. We have the added benefit of sealing punctures and slow leaks! Note – Do not mix balancing beads or powder with our sealants.
  • The three key factors to our tire sealants NOT causing high speed vibration in a vehicle are:
    • Appropriate vehicle application – We recommend the high speed (>45mph) use of our sealants in a minimum of ¾ ton payload or greater vehicles and in any trailers.
    • Correct sealant dosage – Overdosing of the sealant can lead to potential high-speed vibration. Please strictly adhere to the recommended high-speed dosages given in our dosage calculator.
    • Tires are balanced and wheels are true prior to installation of the sealant.
  • The simple answer is that it depends on the type of TPMS system. Some are designed to be compatible with any liquid.
  • Compatible TPMS:
    • External TPMS sensors (screw on the valve stem type)
    • Banded TPMS sensors
    • ATIS (Automatic Tire Inflation Systems)
    • CTIS (Central Tire Inflation Systems) – System dependent
    • Sensors that are glued to the inside of the tire that are designed to be used with liquids (most sensors used in the OTR market)
    • TPMS based on the ABS system
  • Non-compatible TPMS:
    • Sensors commonly found on passenger vehicles that are mounted on the bottom of the valve stem
    • Sensors that are glued to the inside of the tire that are not designed to be used with liquids
  • If you have any doubt about the compatibility of your sensor, please reach out to us and we will let you know.
  • Beware of sealants that state they are “TPMS Safe” as this really depends on the type of TPMS system. There is nothing magical that is added to make the sealant “TPMS Safe.” A liquid is a liquid. Be sure to read the fine print.
  • Yes, tires treated with MULTI SEAL® and FlatOut are completely repairable and retreadable. This is directly attributed to our formula not containing any adhesives or latex. The tire can be easily and completely cleaned before any repairs are made or the casing is retreaded.
  • Upper limit – The product is designed to perform within the normal operating parameters of the tire. In most cases 195-200◦F is the critical upper limit for tires. Our product is regularly used in fleets in extremely hot climates such as the southern United States and Saudi Arabia with no degradation noted.
  • Lower limit – Our products are good down to -35◦C. At the low temperature limit, the material actually does not freeze due to the glycol component. However, it does become viscous. Because the product is thixotropic (shear thinning), once the tire starts moving and the sealant experiences some shear, the viscosity will start to improve. We are used in fleets in Alaska, Canada, and Mongolia with no reported low temperature performance issues.
  • The only exception to the upper and lower temperature limits is our HYDRO 1500 product. Because it is mixed 1:10 with the liquid ballast, the liquid ballast dictates the temperature limits.
  • 99% of competitive tire sealants and flat fixers are latex or adhesive based. The mechanism for sealing a puncture with one of these products is basically gluing the wound together.
  • MULTI SEAL® and FlatOut contain no latex or adhesives.
  • Some of the major benefits of being latex and adhesive free are:
    • Longevity – Latex/adhesives cure in the tire and once it cures it no longer functions as a sealant. This can happen within months of installation. Their solution to this problem is “refreshes” or adding more product. Because our products contain none of these components, we truly last the life of the tire and require no “refreshes.”
    • Balance – When the latex cures, it can cure unevenly in the tire causing balance issues. Our products stay liquid and free flowing for the life of the tire thus not causing an imbalance issue.
    • Clean out – The latex/adhesive products are extremely hard to impossible to clean out of the tires once they cure. Tire service providers will typically not touch these tires for repairs and certainly will not retread them. Our products are fully water washable and easy to clean out of tires, making them repair and retread friendly.

frequently asked questions: FlatOut

  • FlatOut does not believe in a one size fits all solution. Based on this, we have created and are continuing to expand a full line of tire sealants to meet our customer’s needs:
    • FlatOut Classic Formulas
    • FlatOut QuickStrike Formula
  • Do you have a unique need? FlatOut can formulate a solution in-house!
    • Customer feedback is crucial to any continuous improvement process. Our customers have asked us for a product that is easier to install. They have also asked us for a product that seals faster, especially for low air volume tires like bicycles. They want all this without compromising the sealing capability they have come to expect from FlatOut.
    • The team at FlatOut has heard you and we would like to introduce the new FlatOut QuickStrike line of products:
    • Same class-leading sealing power as the original FlatOut Classic Formulas.
    • Flows faster so that less air is lost before the puncture is sealed.
    • Easier to install.
    • One time treatment that lasts the life of the tire!

  • The Small Tire formula is designed for narrow, smaller tires with low air volume. When one of these tires gets a puncture that’s larger than ¼’’, the tire or tube can tear and create a hole that would not be repairable with tire sealant. With that being said, the Small Tire Formula can repair punctures larger than ¼’’, but with the nature of those tires, we only guarantee up to ¼’’.
  • Low air volume tires, especially those like bikes, can and will be sealed by our tire sealants, but it can go flat before the sealant has time to do its job. With tires like this, you need a fast-flowing tire sealant so you can keep on enjoying your ride. We created FlatOut™ QuickStrike™ for when there’s no air to spare!

  • The primary benefit is increased tire safety. An underinflated tire is an unsafe tire!
  • Positive side effects of maintaining proper tire pressure include:
    • maximized tire life
    • better fuel economy
    • less catastrophic failures that lead to new tire purchases
    • less collateral damage due to blowouts
  • Preventing flats also means you’re far less likely to get stranded in the middle of nowhere … or ruin your weekend. And it means you’ll be able to get the job done, whether you’re mowing the lawn, blowing snow off a driveway or towing equipment to a jobsite.
  • For normal size bike and eBike tires, you would use FlatOut QuickStrike Small Tire Formula. If you have Fat Tires, use FlatOut QuickStrike Off-Road Formula.
